Food justice is redistribution of resources to those who are lacking
We are a small community-led group supporting one another and empowering more in the fight against food apartheid in Richmond, Virginia. There is high demand from youth who want to participate in our skill building program. We need more funding for staff to support additional youth. We could use a little help. Please and thanks!
We’re luffa lovas. Started with seedlings from @gr_fit4kids in 2023. And we’ve been going ever since
Please help us with some needs that grants don’t support like utilities, taxes, insurance, support staff, etc. Click the bio link to see how.

Throughout the pandemic months and the 2020 uprisings we stayed busy, conserved resources, and eventually took ownership of a blighted vacant city lot that developers had their eyes on. We partnered with residents, grassroots organizations, and equity-minded nonprofits to transform that lot into a vibrant community space in the middle of Mosby Court public housing. In recent years we helped change local and state policy to advance food justice, among other achievements, but the successful creation of the Mosby Justice Garden as a space for healing, learning, and resources is our greatest.
📜The work in the vid is partly funded by a grant from Richmond’s Health Equity Fund, City of Richmond, and the American Rescue Plan Act.

Today’s announcement is huge for us. We are not one of the large nonprofit food access organizations with huge funders. We are a small powerful group of residents committed to increasing food access by addressing historical inequities in Richmond. We began our work in 2017 partnering with @richmondcity_hd to ensure that the input from regular degular Richmonders would go into food policy planning for the City. After a lot of engagement work with residents our group’s work was included in the Richmond 300 - City of Richmond 2020 Master Plan. This marked the first time that food acces had ever been included in the Master Plan in the 300 year history of Richmond. We also hosted 1 of only 3 townhall discussions held in Virginia to gather input for the Governors Childrens Cabinet’s Roadmap to End Hunger.
Fast forward to 2021 - when we took ownership of a blighted vacant lot in East End Richmond that gentrifiers were targeting, we partnered with @community_5050 to work with neighborhood residents to see what should be done with the spot. And then we submitted a proposal for the Virginia Food Access Investment Fund with @shalomfarms to fund improvements to that vacant lot. We were 1 of 2 projects in Richmond that got approved, so Governor Northam came out to that vacant lot in Mosby Court to announce the VFAIF awards to the entire Commonwealth of Virginia. Since then we’ve consistently partnered with @gr_fit4kids to pay for staff, infrastructure, and youth stipends. That once vacant lot is now the only Black owned community-led community garden in Richmond, and is an anchor for resources and food access programming.
Thanks to all of our supporters and community members who partner with us towards a collective vision.

The average Richmond youth would need to travel outside of their neighborhood to access garden spaces and urban agriculture programming. We are fortunate to be embedded in the community in partnership with residents, supporters, and like-minded organizations. This week youth got a lesson in companion planting, seed families, and nutrient management.
Look y’all! @btgvirginia has been spreading resources throughout the City of Richmond to help communities become more climate change resilient. They blessed the Mosby garden with this rain catcher w/ solar power storage and lighting! The transformation of this space is so amazing. So thankful for this partnership.

Urban gardens contribute to biodiversity in the City and are catalysts for deepening connections with nature. We are proud to be stewards of the land in this space. In the video you will see diverse crops like eggplant, tomato, corn, squash, watermelon, cantaloupe, okra, sunflower, cucumber, luffa, basil, and more all on land that’s been reclaimed by the resident community.
Shoutout to @sentarahealth for continuous support as we transformed these vacant blighted lots into spaces where health challenges are addressed and community is built.
Yesterday we pruned the watermelon run at the Mosby garden. That will give the fruit more resources and more freedom to grow without deprivation and restriction. It’s kind of like what a FREE PALESTINE would do for Gazans! 🍉🇵🇸

It was a very enjoyable Earth Day / 420 Day at the Mosby garden! After a very challenging week for City of Richmond families (especially for this neighborhood), we’re fortunate and grateful to be able to steward this calming green space for community members to connect with each other. Shoutout to @community_5050 for their unwavering support of this space, to @i_vote_for_me for pulling up with resources, to @sentarahealth for funding support, and most importantly the youth and families that we are in community with to manage this space.
